In July 2008, the Veterans Behavioral Health Advisory Board formed (Chapters 555 & 556, Acts of 2008). Immediately, the Board is to analyze the behavioral health needs of veterans and their families in Maryland. Next, it will identify the gaps in what they need and what is available, and what barriers prevent veterans and their families from accessing available health services. Among those entities providing behavioral health services to veterans and their families, the Board will facilitate collaboration, and improve cooperation between State and federal agencies to maximize funding and availability of resources. Finally, the Board will recommend ways to reach those veterans and their families who need behavioral health services and are not receiving them; provide more training and increase the ability of providers to serve more veterans; better coordinate behavioral health services; and provide such services to individuals ineligible for federal benefits due to reasons such as a dishonorable discharge (Code Health-General Article, secs. 13-2701 through 13-2703).
Authorization for the Board extends through May 31, 2011.
