The Task Force on the Status of Women and Information Technology was authorized in July 2004 (Chapter 489, Acts of 2004). The Task Force charge was to study issues relating to the declining involvement of girls and women in information technology. What impact that decline has on the technological literacy of the Maryland workforce, as well as the future state of the workforce, was considered. The Task Force also was to create an awareness throughout Maryland of the status of women and information technology, and identify and observe current laws, regulations, and programs in order to pinpoint those that address the issues of education and workforce development most efficiently. In addition, a statewide plan for women and information technology was devised by the Task Force.

Authorization for the Task Force extends to June 30, 2009; however, since its October 2006 report was the culmination of its work, the Task Force has not met since January 2007.
