In July 2006, the Task Force to Study Raising the Compulsory Public School Attendance Age to 18 was authorized (Chapter 449, Acts of 2006). The Task Force commenced its work in November 2006, when it began to consider the impact of extending the compulsory public school attendance to age eighteen. Through this process, it gathered and reviewed data on extended learning opportunities for teens between the ages of 15 and 18; and examined the adequacy of facilities, staffs, programming, instructional time, and resources to accomodate such a change. The Task Force also projected the impact on student attendance and academic achievement, and assessed the fiscal and social benefits to students and the State of raising the compulsory school attendance age.

On December 1, 2007, the Task Force submitted its report to the Governor and General Assembly. Authorization for the Task Force expired December 31, 2007.
