In July 2007, the Task Force on Renewable Alternative Fuels was authorized (Chapter 540, Acts of 2007). The Task Force studied how State and local government vehicles could use more biodiesel and other renewable fuels and what mandates or incentives would assist that purpose. Also, the Task Force studied home heating issues, and determined how the use of biodiesel and other renewable fuels would affect agricultural and fuel supplies in Maryland, and what the economic and environmental impact would be. Further, the Task Force examined Maryland's current energy policy, specifically as it relates to domestic supply and security; present and future sources for alternative fuels; and needed infrastructure improvements. In addition, the Task Force considered investment potentials; opportunities for the petroleum industry; federal policy and programs in other states; and frequency of review of energy policy to reflect emerging technologies and possible incentives.

The Task Force submitted its final report to the Governor, the Senate Finance Committee, and the House Economic Matters Committee on December 31, 2007. Authorization for the Task Force extends through June 30, 2008.
