Efforts of individuals, groups, and institutions to celebrate the contributions of Marylanders were promoted, supported, and coordinated by the Commission. While planning and executing special events, the Commission also served as a clearinghouse of information about millennium activities statewide.
Activities supported by the Commission included:
Save Maryland's Treasures, preservation grants to save 18 diverse State treasures, from Harriet Tubman's birthplace to America's first radar.
Maryland Goes to the Movies, statewide exhibits and programs celebrating images of Maryland in feature films.
Weavings 2000: The Maryland Millennial Anthology, original works of poetry and fiction from 129 writers.
Maryland in Focus, a traveling photographic exhibit of Maryland images, 1840-1970.
Maryland 2000 Youth Commission, a forum for youth to plan their own millennium projects.
Achievement Counts, presentations by young business executives to 9th graders showing the connection between success at school and in the workplace.
Millennium Seminars, 37 provocative discussions at college campuses throughout the State on topics such as immigration, biotechnology, and women's history.
International Education, a website to prepare students for the global marketplace by locating programs, internships, and opportunities abroad, and a scholarship fund to enable more students to study abroad.
Local Millennium Grants, 52 grants awarded to local projects for historic preservation, parades, theater restoration, exhibits, historical site markers, and archeological conservation.
Harvest for the Hungry: 2000 Food Drive, a two-week food drive with the U.S. Postal Service.
The Commission's final report, Faces of Maryland 2000: A View of a Statewide Celebration, was submitted to the Governor in December 2000.

SAVE OUR SKIPJACKS TASK FORCE

In November 1999, the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000 formed the Save Our Skipjacks Task Force. The Task Force considered ways to increase safety and minimize weather-related risks for commercial vessels. The Task Force also addressed the repair and maintenance of the fleet, and the availability of insurance coverage for the vessels and their crews. Initial recommendations were made by the Task Force on April 17, 2000.
