In October 2003, the Task Force to Study the Availability of Audiology and Speech-Language Services was formed (Chapter 194, Acts of 2003). The Task Force studied and considered both the scope of services provided by licensed audiologists and speech-language pathologists in public schools and their availability. Also observed were how many children are in need of hearing and speech-language services and actually received these services in public schools. Additionally, the Task Force determined how audiology and speech-language services affect the costs of public education in the State.

The Task Force considered whether audiologists and speech-language pathologists are needed in public schools and how to recruit and retain them. Also, the Task Force decided whether the current caseloads and workloads for audiologists and speech-language pathologists need to be adjusted to increase services for children in need.

The Task Force reported to the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee, and the House Ways and Means Committee on December 31, 2003.

Authorization for the Task Force extended to June 30, 2004.
